[P2PJ] - Peer-to-Peer Journalism Mailingliste
Homepage:
lists.infoanarchy.org/mailman/listinfo.cgi/p2pj.
Peer-to-Peer Journalism - creating the new collaborative media.
Technology and Topics, Impact and Incentives.
Discusses weblogs, wikis, interactive encyclopaedias and other forms
of online journalism where reader and writer are often identical. A
mailing list hosted by infoAnarchy and softly moderated by Erik Moeller.
Beschreibung:
"The Internet has given every user the theoretical
possibility to become a publisher. It therefore has the potential to
change the media landscape even more radically than the printing
press. A reliable physical network is already in place, the
applications, however, leave much to be desired. Weblogs like
Slashdot & Kuro5hin or collaborative sites like Everything2 and the
Wiki Wiki Web point to the possibilities; millions of
online-diarists show the demand for real power-tools."
"This mailing list has been created to discuss several
subjects related to what we call peer-to-peer journalism (because
one of its essential attributes is user-to-user-communication)".
These subjects are:
- Technology. "Which content engines are there,
and how can they be improved? What are your experiences with a
particular tool, or your tips for beginners? This does not have
to be restricted to the Web, distributed networks are also
interesting. The level of the discussions should not be too
technical, please remember that many of the list members are
only authors and not coders."
- Topics. "p2pj is supposed to be a platform to
bring journalists with similar interests together. We hope that
in the future sophisticated tools will exist to automate this
process, but right now, collaboration often fails because of
lack of communication. While in-depth discussions should be
moved off-list, calling for participation or attention to a new,
innovative project is alright."
- Impact. "How will peer-to-peer journalism
change the media landscape? Will centralized media still exist
in a decentralized network? If so, how can abuse of power be
prevented? If media become more and more decentralized, how can
professionality and fact-checking be guaranteed?"
- Incentives. "Professional writing takes time,
and while many weblogs are run on the spare time of their
Editors. Even if Editors do not demand money: How can
frustration be avoided? For a site with several full-time
editors, how can revenue be guaranteed? Advertising can be
easily blocked and is often seen as a wall between writers and
readers. What about voluntary or enforced payments? Which ones
work best? What about methods like the 'Street Performer
Protocol', withholding content until a certain sum has been
paid? Which micro- and minipayment systems are recommended, and
which ones are not?"
"It is our belief that the future of the media is in the
hands of the people. We have to build these new media. The faster we
do so, the less abuse of centralized media power is likely to
happen."

[Decentralization]
Homepage:
groups.yahoo.com/group/decentralization.
A mailing list exclusively devoted to the architecture of
p2p-systems, with a lot of traffic and interesting ideas passed around.
Founded by Lucas Gonze, with lots of high-profile subscribers from the
P2P field.
Beschreibung:
- "Is decentralization ever a good idea? If so, when? Is
there non-anecdotal evidence on costs and benefits?"
- "What are the tensions between centralization and
decentralization? Are there any clear principles to use in
evaluating their suitability to a task?"
- "What protocol issues are there? To what degree do the
protocols for Freenet, Gnutella or Napster meet the need? Do we need
an application protocol or something lower level? Can HTTP do the
job? Can we implement peer routing as an add-on to existing
protocols? Is there a call to develop an IETF working group?"
- "Given that authoring and versioning are critical but hard
in a decentralized environment, how can we approach the job? Is it
possible to integrate WebDAV with peer networking?"
- "What are the business issues? Who are the players? Who
else stands to win or lose, and why?"

[Freenet Mailing Lists]
Homepage:
freenetproject.org/cgi-bin/twiki/view/Main/Lists,
freenet.sourceforge.net/index.php?page=lists.
There are several mailing lists for the Freenet-Project. However,
only chat and devl are generally active, with chat being an official
"off topic" discussion list.
Announcements (moderated)
hawk.freenetproject.org/mailman/listinfo/announce.
Please sign up here to be notified of major Freenet developments,
such as announcements of new releases or important bugfixes. This
list is very low traffic (less than one message per month).
Support
hawk.freenetproject.org/mailman/listinfo/support.
Asking for or giving advice relating to getting Freenet working,
bug reports, and suggestions on improving the user experience.
Requests for help are more likely to be heard here than in the other
mailing lists.
Archiv:
hawk.freenetproject.org/pipermail/support.
Development
hawk.freenetproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devl.
Discussion pertaining to the next release of Freenet. What
features should and shouldn't go in, how things should be
implemented, etc.
Discussions about how Freenet should be in general (as opposed to in
the very next release) should go to the technical list. If you think
you have a great idea for a feature or attack, read all of the
documentation first, espcially the Frequently Asked Questions. The
developers have little patience for repeated suggestions.

Technical Discussion
hawk.freenetproject.org/mailman/listinfo/tech
Technical issues related to Freenet, not specifically tied to
day-to-day implementation. Cryptography, packet radio, related
projects, suggestions for future versions, attacks on the design,
etc. Anything which deals with technology and relates to Freenet
should go here.

[Global-Scale Distributed Storage Systems] - BlueSky
Homepage:
www.transarc.com/~ota/bluesky.
"Discussion of design and implementation issues related to the
development of scalable, decentralized storage systems of literally
global scope. The emphasis should be on technical descriptions and
critique of mechanisms providing efficiency, reliability, security, and
similar properties."
Charter:
Many groups are now exploring the development of scalable,
decentralized file systems, such as OceanStore, FreeHaven, Freenet,
and MojoNation. They are better characterized as serverless or peer
to peer than the strictly client / server organization of
traditional systems. The challenges of extreme decentralization and
very large scale are new and difficult while real experience is hard
to come by. While existing projects and proposed systems have
divergent goals and strategies, they face many common problems and
can learn from each others prototypes. It would benefit everyone to
have a forum for clarifying goals, sharing new ideas, soliciting
feedback and getting help with problems. Ideally, the discussion
would help solidify this new field, eventually leading to some
agreement on a taxonomy of goals, problems and solutions. A mailing
list focused on technical issues and steering clear of fuzzier
topics, more like coderpunks than cypherpunks, could provide such a
service. A list dedicated to the exchange of ideas *between* these
groups would supplement the multitude of existing project-specific
discussions and enrich them all.
The charter of the Global-Scale Distributed Storage Systems
mailing list is:
The purpose of the mailing list is to foster discussion of
design and implementation issues related to the development of
scalable, decentralized storage systems of literally global
scope. The emphasis should be on technical descriptions and
critique of mechanisms providing efficiency, reliability,
security, and similar properties. Discussion of goals and
semantics is also desirable, while acknowledging that a
diversity of systems will be built and evaluated. Messages with
primarily political, legal or philosophical content are
discouraged.
