Flock.
Aus der Selbstdarstellung des VarVar-Projektes:
"Currently, in its early days, VARVAR is a better
file-sharing utility. Its underlying design, however, has already
laid the way to a new kind of Internet service and infrastructure -
the PEER WEB. This refers to a network of common users who can not
only retrieve information (e.g. browse web-sites) but also publish
rich content of their own (web-sites, art, services, etc.) to the
world without requiring expensive equipment or fast, uninterrupted
Internet connection. The design of this network also allows for the
implementation of very effective search and classification
algorithms.
Our goal in developing VARVAR is to put together a
selection of mature and well- founded algorithms from the area of
peer-to- peer computing, in order to push the limits of what we can
do with the Internet. The core algorithms underlying VARVAR are
authored by ourselves and Prof. David Mazières of New York
University, others are taken from various other authors in the
field.
We hope you will enjoy playing with VARVAR and be patient
with it, as it is likely that there is a good number of bugs during
its baby days" (Petar Maymounkov

Aktuelle Version
"The current VARVAR release is a preview. It does not support
firewalls. As a result of this, some of the files that can be found on
the network won't actually be accessible (you won't be able to download
them). As soon as we make sure the search protocol works well, we shall
put the firewall support in. Moreover, you will notice that certain
operations like startup and search take up to a minute or two sometimes.
These times will drop down to a few seconds as we implement the
appropriate optimizations. Until then, we appreciate your help in
sharing your files and giving us your feedback".
To start VARVAR under Windows, double-click the VARVAR icon on the
desktop. A console window will open and some text will appear there. Now
VARVAR is running. VARVAR's user interface is entirely web- based and so
to use it, you need to point your browser to http://localhost:8888/.
Once you are there, the rest should be relatively self-evident.
You can quit VARVAR either by closing the console window that popped
up in the first place, or by clicking the "Quit" option on the bottom of
any VARVAR web- page.
This early version of VARVAR contains the core algorithms and not too
much optimization. Because of that, entering the VARVAR network (which
happens upon starting VARVAR) should take about 30 seconds to a minute.
Queries should take around 30 seconds. These numbers will decrease
significantly in the future releases when we implement the appropriate
optimizations.
More importantly, this version DOES NOT support firewalls. This means
that if your computer is behind a firewall, you will most likely get no
connection to the VARVAR network. We know this is a problem for many
people, and so we are implementing firewall support already. It will be
available soon.
