Übersicht
Mozilla ist ein auf dem am 22. Januar 1998 freigegebenen Quellcode
des Netscape Communicator basierendes, für mehrere Plattformen
verfügbares und in insgesamt 46 Sprachen lokalisiertes Paket an
Internet- Anwendungen.
Zu den Kernbestandteilen des Programmpakets gehören u.a.:
- Navigator, ein Web- Browser (mozilla-browser),
- Mail & Newsgroups, ein E-Mail- und News- Client
(mozilla-mailnews),
- Composer, ein WYSIWYG- HTML- Editor,
- Chatzilla (IRC Chat), ein IRC- Client
(mozilla-chatzilla),
- Address Book, eine einfache Kontaktverwaltung.
- Personal Security Manager (PSM, mozilla-psm)
- Development files (mozilla-dev)
- JavaScript debugger for use with Mozilla (mozilla-js-debugger)
- A tool for inspecting the DOM of pages in Mozilla
(mozilla-dom-inspector).
- XML enabled (mozilla-xmlterm)
- Mozilla German Language/Region Package (mozilla-locale-de-at).
Mozilla unterstützt u.a. MathML, Java, XML-RPC sowie die
bidirektionale Spracheingabe und enthält einen DOM Inspector, einen XML-
Parser und eine Active X- Komponente, Plug-in Support unter Linux. Es
gibt u.a. Portierungsprojekte für Qt
und Gnome.
Der Mozilla- Quellcode wiederum dient als Ausgangsbasis für
kommerzielle (z.B. Netscape 6 ff.) und nicht-kommerzielle Produkte (z.B.
Phoenix,
Galeon, K-Meleon, Beonex
u.a.).

Architektur
Die Mozilla-Architektur basiert auf folgenden Kern- Komponenten:
- NSPR - Provides a platform-neutral API for system level and libc
like functions.
- XBL - A markup language for describing bindings that can be
attached to elements in other documents.
- XPCOM - A framework for writing cross-platform, modular
software.
- XPConnect - Allows Javascript objects to transparently access
and manipulate XPCOM onjects.
- XPIDL - A cross platform Interface Description Lanuage used to
specify XPCOM interface classes
- XPInstall - A technology for doing cross-platform installations,
packaging and sofware updates.
- XPToolkit - Toolkit that allows the creation of cross platform
interfaces.
- XUL - The basis of Mozilla's cross platform User Interface.
