Übersicht

Eclipse ist ein offenes Framework zur Integration verschiedener Softwareentwicklungs- Werkzeuge. Diese werden über Plug-Ins in die Hauptplattform eingefügt und können dann über die gemeinsame Workbench benutzt werden. Das SDK-Paket enthält als Hauptbestandteil eine vollständige Java-Entwicklungsumgebung. Es gibt darüber hinaus jedoch auch Entwicklungsumgebungen für C/C++, COBOL und andere Sprachen.

Das Ziel des Eclipse- Projektes ist es, eine robuste und vollständige Industrieplattform für die Entwicklung hochintegrierter Entwicklungswerkzeuge und eine Alternative zur Entwicklungsplattform Microsoft Visual Studio.NET zu erschaffen.

Eclipse baut zwar auf dem Java SDK auf, muss jedoch wegen der eigenen Oberflächenbibliotheken SWT (Standard Widget Toolkit) auf jedes Zielsystem portiert werden.

Die C/C++ IDE für die Eclipse-Pattform umfasst einen GUI-basierten Quelltext-Editor mit fortschrittlichem Code Browsing und Navigations-Features wie einem Code-Asistenten, Syntax Highlighting und einer integrierten Hilfe. Zudem bietet sie einen integrierten C/C++ Debugger mit einem direkten Zugang zum darunter liegenden Kommandozeileninterface, um spezielle Debugger-Befehle auszuführen.

Eclipse besteht aus drei Subprojekten, der Plattform, den Java Development Tools (JDT) und der Plug-in Development Environment (PDE). Eclipse selbst soll als einheitliche Plattform dienen, für die Dritte eigene Werkzeuge anbieten, die Nutzer so zu neuen Funktionen kombinieren können.

The Eclipse Tools Project will use its experience in developing tools for eclipse as a source of technical input and feedback for the Eclipse Project.

The mission of the Eclipse Technology Project is to provide new channels for open source developers, researchers, academics and educators to participate in the on-going evolution of Eclipse. It is organized as three related project streams, namely Research, Incubators and Education. Research projects explore research issues in Eclipse-relevant domains such as programming languages, tools, and development environments. Incubators are small, informally structured projects which add new capabilities to the Eclipse software base. Education projects focus on the development of educational materials, teaching aids and courseware.
