Kate ist ein erweiterter Editor für das K Desktop Environment. Die
offizielle Homepage-Adresse von Kate lautet

Die zum Zeitpunkt dieses Artikels aktuelle Version von Kate ist Kate
1.0 für KDE 2.2.2.
Aus der Selbstdarstellung:
»Kate is a multi document editor, based on a rewritten
version of the kwrite editing widget of KDE, offering all the
features of that plus a bunch of its own. Kate has been been moved
to the kdebase package, and is a builtin part of your favorite
desktop since release 2.2.
Being a native KDE application, Kate is of course born with
networking transparency, as well as it integrates with the
outstanding features of KDE. Choose it for viewing HTML sources from
konqueror, editing configuration files, writing new applications or
any other text editing task. You still needs just one running
instance of Kate.
With a multi-view editor like Kate you get a lot of
advantages. You can view several instances of the same document and
all instances are synced.. Or you can view more files at the same
time for easy reference or simultaneous editing. The terminal
emulation and sidebar are docked windows that can be plugged out of
the main window, or replaced therein according to your preference«

Interessant ist Kate vor allem für das Editieren von XML-Dokumenten,
z.B. DocBook XML (siehe Netmarks).

Features
Folgende Fähigkeiten hat Kate derzeit (Stand: September 2002):
- Edit all kinds of text files using the next generation text
editor widget (debugged + enhanced kwrite widget - open 50MB files
in a few seconds)
- Multiple views allows you to view more instances of the same
document and/or more documents at one time.
- Can reopen files if you want it to.
- Built in dockable terminal emulation.
- A nice dockable "sidebar" displays a list of open documents and
a directory viewer with a directory chooser and a filter chooser.
- A "Filter" command allows you to run selected text through a
shell command.
- A plugin interface to allow third party plugins, as well as the
Kate Team to provide extra functionality for you to chose from is in
development.
- Global grep dialog (like you know it from KDevelop)
Geplante Features:
Geschichte
The Kate projects started in December 2000 at sourceforge.net. In the
first month Kate was known as KCEdit
(C = Cullmann).
After some other people joined the project (like Micheal Bartl and
Anders Lund), we changed the name to something more neutral and not as
similar to KEdit -> Kant. Some time went
on and Kant get more and more popular and some new devs joined the
project (like Joseph Wenniger). The next big step in evolution was that
Kant was allowed to be placed in kdebase
as a replacement/ addon for the old KWrite app.
The only big problem now was that Kant
sounds for some people too similar like "c*nt" and "can't",
that was the reason for the final rename to Kate (KDE Advanced
Text Editor).
