Übersicht
Der Apache httpd ist ein quelloffener Webserver mit
Unterstützung für HTTP/1.1 (RFC2616), der von der
Apache Software Foundation (ASF) und zahlreichen Freiwilligen
entwickelt wird. Die Bezeichnung »Apache« bedeutete ursprünglich
»a patchy server«.

»The Apache HTTP Server Project is an effort to develop and
maintain an open-source HTTP server for modern operating systems
including UNIX and Windows NT. The goal of this project is to
provide a secure, efficient and extensible server that provides HTTP
services in sync with the current HTTP standards.
Apache has been the most popular web server on the Internet
since April of 1996. The August 2002 Netcraft Web Server Survey
found that 63% of the web sites on the Internet are using Apache,
thus making it more widely used than all other web servers combined«

Der Apache httpd ist der weltweit meistgenutzte Web-Server. Anfang November
2003 liefen zwei Drittel aller Web Server mit Apache; dies entspricht
einem Marktanteil von über 67 Prozent. Als Mitbewerber folgen Microsofts
IIS
mit 21,02 Prozent und SunONE mit 3,39 Prozent. Insgesamt wurden für
diese Statistik von Netcraft die Antworten von knapp 45 Millionen Sites
ausgewertet (Quelle: Netcraft November 2003 Web Server Survey).
Die Stärken des Apache httpd sind u.a.:
- Schnittstellen zu allen gängigen Authentifizierungssystemen;
- Integration von "Plug-Ins" in den geläufigsten
Programmiersprachen des Internets;
- standardisierte Integration des Sicherheitsprotokolls SSL;
- Schnittstellen zu allen wichtigen Datenbanksystemen.
