Übersicht
Die eierlegende Wollmilchsau unter den Editoren ist Emacs. Gibt es
irgendwas, was Emacs nicht kann? Kaffeekochen, so sagt man. Aber was
nicht ist, kann noch werden. Emacs kann mit den wohl meisten
Tastenkürzeln und Möglichkeiten im Feld der Editoren aufwarten. Wer die
auswendig kann, der verdient Respekt. Ich persönlich habe Emacs von
meiner Platte verbannt, weil ich zum Programmieren kein halbes
Betriebssystem brauche. Aber das ist letztenendes Geschmackssache.
Richard Stallman schwört auf Emacs. Kein Wunder, denn er hat ihn ja auch
entwickelt. Die Liste der unterstützten Betriebssysteme ist lang und die
Versionsnummer ungewöhnlich hoch. Der Funktionsumfang ist schier endlos
und eigentlich sollte mit Emacs jeder glücklich werden, denn er bietet
alles, was man zum effektiven Programmieren braucht. Es gibt neben der
Kommandozeilen- Variante mit XEmacs auch noch eine GUI-Variante fuer X,
den XEmacs. Letztenendes ist die Nutzung von Emacs dann aber doch nur
Glaubensfrage.

Emacs is an advanced and extensible editor. A Major Mode
customizes Emacs for editing text of a particular sort. PSGML is a
major mode for SGML documents.
PSGML has several functions for editing SGML documents.
Indentation according to element nesting depth and identification of
structural errors (but it is not a validating SGML parser). Menus
and commands for inserting tags with only the contextually valid
tags. Attribute values can be edited in a separate window with
information about types and defaults. Structure based editing
includes movement and killing; and also several commands for folding
editing.
