Verfechter von Open-Source-Software bemühen oft das Argument,
offene Software weise eine höhere Code-Qualität auf. Reasoning,
Anbieter von automatisierten Software-Inspektions-Services,
versuchte nun diese Behauptung anhand der TCP/IP-Implementierung von

Microsoft,
www.microsoft.com/licensing/sharedsource.
Microsoft's Shared Source Initiative is a source licensing
framework that makes source code broadly available while preserving
the intellectual property rights that sustain a strong software
business. The Shared Source Initiative includes a spectrum of source
code access programs and licenses that promote technical innovation
and bring value to businesses. Each source licensing program is
tailored to the specific needs of a particular Microsoft constituent
community.

Over the last few years there has been increasing interest
in the multiplicity of software models. Much of this has focused on
Open Source Software (OSS)—a label applied to what is in fact a
range of models, all of which include the publication of source
code. Many of Microsoft's customers and partners have asked us about
our source code philosophy and how it compares to other models in
the industry today—specifically the OSS model used for such software
as the Linux operating system. Microsoft has heard our customers'
requests, and we have been studying the OSS model.

»Applications have dramatically improved, too, both in
quality and quantity: OpenOffice, AbiWord, Mozilla, Evolution, Gimp
are examples of packages allowing Linux to be used for everyday
work. So, is Linus Torvalds' creature now ready to conquer the
desktop? In my opinion, the answer is "not fully, not for everyone",
and the reason is the lack of solid standards, which results in the
following problems [...]«.
