General Levels of Linux Printer Support:

Device Type	Level of Support
Postscript.	Full Feature Printing Postscript is the standard page description language (PDL) under Linux and Unix. Devices that can print Postscript documents are the best supported, with excellent text and image quality. Using open source technology like like the Enhanced Printing System brought to you by HP, you can easily configure device-specific features like duplexing and watermarks on any Postscript printer.
PCL Only.	Basic Printing Under Linux and Unix, devices that do not understand Postscript require translation to their native page description language (Ghostscript is most often used for this). With Ghostscript translation for PCL printers, you can expect good text and image quality. However, not all device specific features are available. HP is working in the open source community to bring Linux support for these devices up to the same high level that is enjoyed with Postscript printers.
Unsupported PDL.	Unsupported This kind of device generally uses a proprietary page description language that is only supported on non-Linux platforms.
