RAID Management", by Derek Vadala, 12/05/2002,

raidtools has been the standard software RAID management package
for Linux since the inception of the software RAID driver. Over the
years, raidtools have proven cumbersome to use, mostly because they
rely on a configuration file (/etc/raidtab) that is difficult to
maintain, and partly because its features are limited. In August
2001, Neil Brown, a software engineer at the University of New South
Wales and a kernel developer, released an alternative. His mdadm
(multiple devices admin) package provides a simple, yet robust way
to manage software arrays. mdadm is now at version 1.0.1 and has
proved quite stable over its first year of development. There has
been much positive response on the Linux-raid mailing list and mdadm
is likely to become widespread in the future. This article assumes
that you have at least some familiarity with software RAID on Linux
and that you have had some exposure to the raidtools package.

When you look at some of the installation documents for any of
popular Linux distributions, you will see only few mentions of the
term RAID [...] Even in the latest documentation of the latest Linux
releases, this is likely the only thing you will see about RAID.
This is one big reason why I think we should move past this barrier
and demonstrate that RAID can be used by "normal" people. [...]

A mammoth review with countless pages and graphs. If you are
looking at RAID, however, it's well worth your time to read this
report.
If you want a lot of fast, reliable storage without paying a huge
price premium, IDE RAID fits the bill. As an added bonus, it's
readily available now in a number of different flavors from quite a
few different manufacturers. We've rounded up four IDE RAID flavors
from 3ware, Adaptec, HighPoint, and Promise and run them through the
wringer. Actually, we ran them through a bunch of wringers. The
cards have different capabilities, features, and performance, but
which one is right for you?
TechReport.com: "TR's IDE RAID round-up", by Geoff
'Dissonance' Gasior, 12:00 am, December 4, 2002,

As IDE hard drive manufacturers squeeze more and more storage
capacity onto new drives, they're hacking the warranty coverage for
standard drives down to one year. You get more data to use, but
manufacturers seem less and less willing to guarantee the integrity
and safety of all those extra bytes. RAID can help you take back
some of that reliability, but that's not all. A RAID array can also
dramatically increase your overall hard disk performance. In some
cases, IDE RAID can even offer you the best of both worlds:
redundancy to protect against drive failure and better overall
storage performance to pry open the bottleneck. [...]
TechReport.com: "Real-world IDE RAID explored. Are the
extra drives worth it?", by Geoff 'Dissonance' Gasior,

Sadly, RAID's "kills bugs dead" motto doesn't quite translate to
computers. While a can of pesticide might be able to wipe out a
cockroach problem, there's nothing a RAID (Redundant Array of
Inexpensive Disks) can do for your computer in terms of dealing with
bugs. What RAID can do, however, is give you a performance boost, or
some peace of mind, or both. For quite some time, RAID was basically
limited to high-end SCSI workstations and servers, far out of the
reach of most power users. However, in the past couple of years
we've seen several IDE RAID solutions that aim to bring RAID's
benefits to IDE systems. These solutions, available on PCI cards and
motherboards, are popping up everywhere these days. Given its ready
availability and theoretical benefits, it's only natural that we
give IDE RAID a real-world workout to see how it really performs.
