»In 1999 and 2000, the hype was all about what effect open
source technology, such as Linux, might have on the enterprise.
Three years later, we find that Linux is actually proving to be a
viable enterprise technology. The questions then become what is it
ready for and where is it being used. [...]
As Linux continues to creep into the enterprise, the
question still appears to be how much of a role it will play as part
of an organization’s infrastructure. Perhaps the Linux community
should spend less time fighting a religious war against Microsoft
and more time positioning Linux as the logical migration path from
UNIX.
Linux has a good chance of becoming a major force as an
embedded infrastructure player. AMR Research is currently preparing
a Report that discusses these issues as well as the place of Linux
in the enterprise«.
